Meet the instructor
Don Porth
Don Porth began his fire service career in 1980 as a student and volunteer firefighter. He would work for the fire department of the City of Salem, Oregon for one year then spend the next 27 years with Portland (Oregon) Fire & Rescue. He transitioned from firefighter to Public Education Officer in 1990 and managed the youth firesetting intervention program for approximately 10 years. Even though his job duties in public education would evolve, he remained involved with youth firesetting until his retirement from Portland in 2011. Don continued to participate in this field of work into his retirement and continues today. Don has served as an instructor, consultant, and is currently the YFIRES data system manager.
Aside from involvement with the youth firesetting intervention efforts, Don is the historian for Portland Fire. He has organized the historic documents and stories of Portland Fire & Rescue, which began serving Portlanders in 1853. This includes extensive documentation of members, fire stations, and fire apparatus, all specific to Portland, Oregon. Don has published a web site at www.PortlandFireHistory.com to share this historic tale.
